The Infancy Of A New Year.

We take our first tentative steps as infants in the year, 2014.  A year that will have potholes on our pathways of positive pursuit.  Yet, with each pothole, we stumble, get back out and we learn.  We understand that if the potholes were mistakes, we gather new knowledge.  If the potholes were adversity, the adversity makes us more determined.

Last year, I had extremely anti-social neighbours move in below us.  They did everything they could to upset us and to this day, I've no idea why.  One night, from his garden, the so-called adult of the house was screaming up threats and obscenities to my son and I.  We could take no more.

I went outside, challenged my anxieties and spoke my mind.  I remembered everything that had caused us a living hell for nearly a year.  I spoke my mind, clearly and calmly.  I've never seen a bully back down so fast. Since that day of confrontation, about six months ago, we now have our peaceful life back as it should be. Nobody has the right to impose on our right to a peaceful life.

I always endeavour to find the positive out of a negative.  Those unruly neighbours have been mostly respectful since that horrible night.  Before the altercation, I had expressed concerns about my neighbours to my housing association.  I was offered a brand new place that I hope to be in by the beginning of May.  If it transpires, it will be a beginning in so many ways.  And yes, another positive out of a negative.

If I do make that move this May, it will mark the end of my son and Penny the beloved dog, living with me. A chance for Tristan and I to get on with our lives.  Indeed, a chance to finally write my book.  I've been living in such times of uncertainty.  So uncertain that I couldn't concentrate on what I really want to do.

I visualise that fresh start in a brand new place.  I will be sad yet philosophical of moving on from the garden I created.  One man and his shovel.  Through all kinds of weather.  A garden that was a statement of peaceful defiance as all around were gardens of squalor.  A sanctuary for the soil, for the soul.  I always have the memories captured in photos.  A snapshot of the seasons.  A snapshot of my life.
The ethos of my blog shall carry on.  An ethos of demonstrating that my mental health issues are only a small part of who I am.  An ideal of being here for others as they have been here for me.  I shall continue to be discreetly in the background.  Being of support and encouragement.

I dream of a Rainbow Planet.  Rainbows without borders.  A world where we celebrate diversity.  A world where politicians learn that it's all about compassion, not corruption.

And my friend, what of you?  What are your dreams, your hopes, your aspirations for 2014?

    1. Hi Alex,

It was like deja vu. We went through such an awful time with previous neighbours. For a second time, a positive result. And now, hopefully, a new place for me and a new start for my son.

      Thank you, Alex.

  2. A new beginning, it sounds most positive indeed, and will set a focus to your writing I'm sure, despite missing your loved ones. Will your new place have a garden? If not, then you must create one around a window sill. I've done the same myself many moons ago, and it makes you creative heh. Every new phase has some reasoning to it I find, and I wish you naught but happiness when the time comes for you to move onwards and upwards *smiles. For myself.....? Hmm. I need to focus too, very much so, focus on my work, and managing my time much, much better. It's so easy to end up with a whole day passing and little done but drift on painkillers, walk Lards, have my no-choice nap, get the shopping done, and bob about on the computer, when I need to get the vast amount of chores around me done, p-laus some actual work, and stop living in what amounts to a giant game of Kerplunk. If I can do that and continue to stay positive, retain my cycling, and make folks laugh I'll be happy enough. There's never a definite there, but I hope it is the case. *smiles. Peace and light to you Gary, all will be well for you. I know it. x

    1. Hi Michelle,

A fresh start with a new opportunity to finally get some writing accomplished. My son and Penny will, I'm sure, be fairly close by. The new place, if I do get it, will have a large balcony for my wee folks and a few plants. There is a communal garden being constructed.

Each phase and a new chapter in our lives. My dear friend, despite all your concerns, I know that you shall endeavour to keep going with all your positive resources. I know you cultivate healthy thinking conducive to a better environment. I'm a big admirer or your writing and your artistic creativity. This bodes well for 2014. You make others smile and through the irony of life, you shall light up the world with your infectious smile.

To a better, more positive New Year to you and your loved ones, Michelle.

  4. Hi Gary - I wondered what had happened .. but thought I'd find out in due course ... so now I hope all your plans come together for 2014 and you can settle and write your book - it will find much empathy from many of us.

My thoughts have been expressed in my two recent Prayer type posts and I'll add a couple of thoughts in the next one ...

Your garden is delightful and I hope you will have a similar opportunity again .. being out with the plants is so therapeutic ... I really need a garden - that will come anon I hope ..

    1. Hi Hilary,

I had an ongoing challenge with my neighbours. So bad that I had to wear headphones just to try and write something, anything. I now look forward to a fresh start and hopefully in a new home without the unfair distractions.

I always consider your posts to be some of the most comprehensive, thoughtful and articulate blogs I have the fortune of reading.

I cannot cope with my garden on my own any more. It's high maintenance. However, I should be having a balcony that I can make a therapeutic gardening statement. I hope you get a place with a garden. I know how much it has meant to me.

      Thank you, Hilary.

A peaceful New Year to you.

A new start calls for a new garden *insert gnomes here* I'm with you on spreading a movement of kindness--in a world where connections are instantaneous, our society has somehow become more disconnected. I am sort of envious that you're experiencing snow. But not so much when I really think about it as I get cold easily even when it's just raining, haha. Penny's looking good, playing in the snow. I'm a bit confused here. I didn't realise Penny was your son's dog and I don't know who Tristan is. I feel sad at the idea of you not having Penny with you any more because she's been such a big part of the life you've showed us here on your blog. I hope this is going to be a good move for you.

You are so correct. The magic comes from within. The magic shall come along. Thank you for such a thoughtful comment.

Your support and encouragement is truly appreciated, Yolanda. I'm always here for you, dear friend. Thank you!

It has been difficult to cope. Tristan will try to find a place near to where I'm hopefully moving to. Him and Penny, living together.

I have never seen such a nasty person do such an abrupt about change. I cannot be doing with bullies. Had too much of that in the past.

Finances can overwhelm us. I hope that through careful budgeting and marking out priorities, that 2014 will be a better, more restful sleep time for you, Caren.

You have an exceptional grace, eloquence, and downright humanness about you. I don't believe that's exclusive from your mental health challenges. I believe its actually nurtured by them. That, as you say, there are positives that come through the negatives; your mental health struggles are something form which you and all of us actually benefit from.

  26. Neighbour disputes and moving house away from Tristan, Penny and your garden - this is the kind of post that fills me the same kind of panic that a pot hole turning into a sink hole would cause. But nothing ever turns out as bad as I imagine at first. I too confronted a local bully last week. Incredible how fast a persons attitude changes when they realise you're not afraid of calling them out for being rude. I would love to know the words of wisdom that came forth during your calm but firm confrontation. I am glad to read that by May you can choose whether or not to move house, rather than feeling like you have too. As far as your book goes, it seems the more time I have to do things the less I get them done. If only I'd written a sentence a day over the last 3+ years - that would be over 1000 sentences... could this be the beginning of a new blog hop! *shudders* - All the best for the new year Gary I am sure it will be filled with many blessings (more than enough to fill the potholes.)

    1. Hi Ida,

It's going to be quite the year. A few years back, I had similar neighbours that caused the whole neighbourhood aggravation. I got them evicted, eventually. I couldn't believe that it was happening all over again. Tristan and Penny, understand that I have to get on with my life. And thus, so do they. The pot hole can grow into a crater of negative speculation. I know you realise that the worst case scenario is only that. We can make things change towards the positive we deserve.

You challenging that local bully and the swift change in their attitude is proof just what lies behind the bullies' mask. I told my neighbour that my son and I would tolerate no more. We had a few years of peace in the neighbourhood and I would not allow them to continue putting us through a living hell. I pointed out several things to the man. I told him that if there was any more trouble that I would lodge a formal complaint. He seemed shocked that I would be so assertive. He apologised to my son and I.

May should hopefully be the turning point as I may then be living in a more manageable place. I struggle to cope do everything on my own without any help. I've been so busy being of support to my son as he goes from one crisis to another, I have had no time to focus on writing a book. It might see like an excuse. However, when so many negative distractions have been going on, I couldn't think straight.

You can catch up with those sentences. The catch up with the sentences blog hop! Yikes! :)

Thank you, Ida. And may 2014 be fulfilling, positive and peaceful for you. The potholes shall be covered with those many blessings.

I have a good feeling that this is going to be a good year, even with upheaval. A book. Each word, a shared experience. The blog, an email to the world, my friend.

Future people will probably be writing in a language we could not comprehend. You do well, Mr. R.

Here's to an interesting New Year, Rob.

  34. What a beautiful post. I like to try to turn the negative into a positive too. Sometimes it takes me longer to see the positive, but I am working on that. Your fresh start (if it happens) sounds like it will be wonderful in so many ways. There is something about starting anew that is appealing. If it doesn't happen- I know you will see the up side to that, too! :)

Calling out your neighbor was a bit scary just before you did it. No one likes confrontation, but it changed your lives for the positive.

My neighbour had threatened us on numerous occasions. We try to ignore it. It just got to the point that something needed to be done. I was very surprised at the complete change in attitude of such a bully. A positive result from a situation that shouldn't of happened in the first place.

Thank you for your kind words, Robin. We can embrace change and think of it as an exciting adventure.

My hopes for the new year are to enable my husband to leave his job when he is ready by producing enough income that we can use it to buffer what he brings in. He wants to retire next year and if I can do this, he will be able to. That is my goal with my writing and publishing. To sell enough for peace of mind. I hope you will enjoy your new place, if it happens for you, Gary. I, too, wish you peace and harmony. At your new place, will you be able to garden?

I wish that any change you have to make is smooth. Eat right, get good sleep and take enough rest. Changes can take a lot out of us, even the positive and good ones.

I agree with you on any mental illness being only a very small part of us. To me most of us have some kind of emotional hard ships. It is just that some of us are able to hide them.

I wish you all the best in your new place. I would certainly miss that wonderful garden, but perhaps the wee folks will enjoy their new spot as well, whether it's in your new place, or in your garden.
I also wish all the best to Tristan as he makes a fresh start as well. The only question remains, as so many others have asked, who will Penny be living with? I know I'm not up as late as you are...but I'm confused on that part...

I appreciate you backtracking to this posting, River. You reach a point where enough truly is enough. We'd been through this all before and I couldn't believe it was happening again. Bullies are really cowards. Amazing what can happen when you call their bluff. They they get sucked into the depths of the earth :)

Indeed, the garden I have is constant maintenance. The wee folks will be happy no matter where we end up. I just want that time to focus without worrying about neighbours. A book about rainbows, perhaps :) Thank you, River.

Here's to a happy, better 2014 for you.

      Gary :)
