Four-Poster Roller Coaster.

I've spent a good portion of the last few days in bed.  Yep, Boxing Day became more like "Bedding Day."

My doctor told me to stay out of bed because I wasn't getting enough rest.  Ah, those were the days.

For the last few days I've been mostly bedridden.  Ah, those were the days, bed riding....

Feels rather like the flu.  I've had a flu shot.  Now I wonder if a flu shot was literal and it gave me the flu. What next?  Take a headache pill to get a headache?

My former spouse and I purchased a real fancy four-poster bed from a real fancy bed shop in Richmond, British Columbia, many years ago.  We were lying in bed and realised that the mattress had crashed to the floor.  Before your imagination goes places, I shall let you know that the underneath support for the mattress had bent and thus, the mattress caved onto the floor.  A bit of a four-poster roller coaster ride ensued over the next week or so. Slap mattress back in place.  Flop.  Slap mattress back in place.  Flop and thud....

Having unsuccessfully been able to fix the underneath support, we went back to the real fancy bed shop and complained.  The sales dude said to us, "What were you doing?  Diving onto the bed from your wardrobe?" I thought, "How the hell does he know we have a wardrobe?"  My wife replied to him, "No way!  The metal support thingy to keep the mattress off the floor is totally bent!"  Dude chuckled at us.  We returned the bed and got a full refund.  We put the refund money in our spare, actually usable bed so we would have something to fall back on.

A buddy of mine was moving from one side of Vancouver to another.  On top of his car was a mattress.  He decided it would be a really fun thing to have a drag race with the car beside us.  He raced forward and the light at the bottom of the hill went from green to red.  He slammed on the brakes as his mattress flew off the roof.  Next moment and the mattress was sliding through the busy intersection of South East Marine Drive and Fraser Street.  Thankfully, no accident occurred.  Except for my friend crapping himself.

Yeah, I know. My name's Fred Flintstone and I'm gonna' make your bed rock!  Those were the days.....

Here's to a happy, hopeful 2014.

  1. There was a time when mattresses were built to last. I mean, you could have 11 children and your mattress was able to bear it. If it makes you feel any better my husband and my mattress is hooped. We had to reinforce it with a board.

    Your friend's story is hilarious!

Thanks for viisting my blog and for your words of friendship, kindness and support.

    1. Hi Birdie,

Ah yes, a mattress made of straw. A roll in the hay. How did that bun get in the bed? Ignore me. Sorry about your hooped mattress. You could have a board meeting on your bed :)

Quite the visual in regards to my friend's flying mattress.

You are most welcome. Please understand that we are all here for each other. Be gentle with your self and smile, dear friend.

      A hopeful 2014.

  2. Oh Gary. Rest up and look after yourself. And the collapsing bed happens here too. The support for the mattress is sub-standard and died. Just after the warranty for the bed expired. So I have fixed it. Often.

  3. Sorry, don't mean to laugh at your expense, but that was hilarious! The bed stories, not the you've been ill story. I do hope you are well soon! I think rest is definitely what you need - you were up all Christmas night helping folks, and a good night's sleep is needed now! Take care!

Wishing a very healthy, happy, and paper work free New Year!

    1. Hi Yolanda,

That's okay. I thought trying to have a bit of a laugh would distract me from the illness. I'm feeling slightly better, thank you. Christmas Day and being online until three in the morning of Boxing Day, probably didn't help.

Your kind words are cherished. Less paperwork and more fun. A peaceful, hopeful 2014 to you and your loved ones.

  4. When I first felt the "sniffle from hell", I knew I was in trouble. Why I can't get a common cold like everyone else is one question that pisses me off. Their "allergy" becomes my bronchial pneumonia and by the time I get well (4-5 weeks) they've been partying it up, and have another "allergy" to give me. I'm phobic of people with good reason.

    1. Dear Dana,

Why have a common cold when you can have an uncommon cold. I'm sorry you have ongoing sniffles from hell. I don't party. I'm sometimes phobic of people that has nothing to do with their physical allergies. You know I adore you.

And remember, you are going to start 2014 with that sense of wonder your inner child wants you to cherish.

A hopeful, healthy 2014 to you, dear Dana.

  6. Gives a whole new meaning to "make your bed" when you have to literally MAKE the bed each day.
The flu shot is supposed to give you a very mild case of harmless flu symptoms so your body prepares antibodies, then when the real flu comes around, you don't get sick. Works the same as smallpox vaccinations.

    1. Hi Linda,

Good idea. Way back when, my then wife and I purchased a really expensive bed and it was supposed to actually stay of the ground. Hanging onto the four posts for dear life :) Thank you and glad you enjoyed my bedtime stories.

Hope you have a great 2014, Linda.

      Gary :)

  41. Thanks for the laugh :) Hope you are feeling better now. The last time I got the flu shot I got seriously ill. I haven't caught the flu in several years - since the last shot. I'll continue to take my chances with natural immunity.

    1. Hi Donna,

I'm glad this could make you laugh, my good friend. I'm still feeling like crap, but the crap aint as bad as it was. Natural immunity seems like a plan. Being in a high-risk group, it's advised that I take the ironic flu shot.

Wishing a peaceful and hopeful 2014, Donna.

  43. You always make me smile or laugh, even though I'm sad you were (hopefully not anymore) sick. I bet that mattress looked the worse for the wear after it's slide through the intersection! I hate a bed that creaks, but would hate the supports crashing even more! Thanks for sharing and brightening my day, especially, also, with your photo of your street! Makes me feel better about my overcast gloomy day...! Happiest of new years to you Gary!

    1. Hi Lisa,

I'm most pleased that I could make you smile or laugh, Lisa. I'm starting to improve and have managed to get back to commenting. It was the box spring part of a mattress and it slid real fast through the intersection. A creaky bed is not good and could keep one awake. Waking up at a lower level and crashing to the carpet was not exactly fun :) That photo was from last January. Of course, this time it's sunny and hot. Or maybe not.

Thank you and here's wishing you and your loved ones a peaceful 2014.

      Gary :)

  44. Gary, my friend, there is so many smiles in that post. And I'm happy to see you have all your puns in place...something to fall back on indeed!

My hubs and I had a bed with a broken metal do-hicky too. We blamed it on the kids jumping on the bed. Kids are easy marks ;)

Hope your 2014 is as amazing and as awesome as yourself!

    1. Hi Elizabeth,

I'm most heartened you could get smiles from this posting. My puns are always something I can fall back on.

Kids are convenient to take the blame :) Nothing worse than a broken metal do-hicky.

      Thank you, Elizabeth.

A fantastic 2014 to you and your loved ones.

  47. Glad you are feeling better and hope your current bed isn't such a roller coaster ride when you are trying to sleep. I laughed out loud at your two mattress stories!

Make sure to get your rest. :)

  48. Oh- and cool cover photo! Love seeing the snow fall because it is so pretty. It is freezing here, so I am starting to think about warmer weather. Cold without snow isn't as fun!

    1. Hi Jess,

Thank you and I'm better but still rather exhausted. My current bed is a temporary mattress. My air bed that was also temporary, suddenly got a great big lump in it. No, not me. Glad you liked the bedtime stories :)

Ah, yes, literally a cool cover photo. That photo was from last January. No snow so far this year. Yes, just cold without snow seems like we are being cheated. Here's to warmer weather.

Peace and good wishes to you, Jess.

      Gary :)
