Gutter Balls.

As I continue to challenge my fatigue, try to discover the underlying cause, I thought it might help if I travelled back in time.  Back to a time when I was one of the greatest athletes in the world you have never heard of.

Oh yeah, a bit of reminiscing, way, way back in time, back to the early 80's.  And I mean the early 1980's.

I was a five pin bowling star.  A game rather unique to Canada.  A game that takes some adjustment if you are used to ten pin bowling.  You try five pin bowling after ten pin bowling and five pin makes you feel like you are in some kind of a marbles competition.

For more insight into five pin bowling you can always visit Jo at: JO ON FOOD, LIFE AND A SCENT OF CHOCOLATE

Here is our five pin bowling team.  Been so long that I cannot remember all the names of the team members.  I can tell you that the incredibly good looking guy on the back right of the photo with the tacky green spotted shirt and 1970's porno movie type moustache, is, yes, actually me!  Of course, I've never seen a 1970's porno movie.  I assumed the reference to my moustache must be correct. The young lady I'm placing my hands on her shoulders is the young lady I ended up marrying. Maybe she divorced me because I was a better bowler than her.  Moving on to the next photo.....
I realise it's difficult to see, but this is the trophy I received for being part of the Varsity Ridge, Vancouver Bowling champs, 1980-81.  This brings back some fond memories and will be a catalyst as I continue to battle this chronic fatigue.

I recall the first time I went five pin bowling.  I was about fourteen.  The person trying to teach me told me to, "Try to avoid getting gutter balls!"  I was curious about that statement.  I had a very long shower when I went home.

  1. Good memories for me too! My hubby and I started dating after we'd bowled in the same league for a few years (10 pin though). I got used to the fact he was the better bowler so we're still married :)
5 pin is a whole different ball game - so hard!

I bet you and your hubby make for a striking couple. You never know, if you played five pin with your husband, you might find you are the better bowler.

      Thanks, my kind friend.

  4. Way back the late 1960's, I bowled in a ten pin league. I thought I was fairly good until my Dad talked me into going with him to bowl duck pins. Dang, those little suckers were hard to hit. He beat me bad. I went back to ten pins (grin).

Only thing missing is the cheesy, sleazy, gold medallion. My moustache still refuses to grow in the middle. A bit of a Charles Bronson thing happening. The stuff growing in my tache was all part of a science experiment. Those who snorted remnants suddenly discovered they were my starstruck fans.

Candlestick bowling involves dripping wax on your belly button. Lawn bowling and strip bingo.

  11. I keep forgetting you are Canadian and not British. Never heard of 5 pin, although in this part of the country candlepin and duck pin were very popular. I never liked 10 pin b/c the balls are way too heavy. I could never get them to roll, so much as slide, down the alley cause I'm not strong enough. Now I have a torn rotator cuff. Last time I went bowling, which was in California, my arm was unusable for days.

  31. I just went 10 pin bowling about a month ago (after a decade or more of no bowling). As you can imagine, I was terrible. Just awful. That ball seemed determined to find the gutter. Obviously, the ten years I spent (mostly) lying in bed with a migraine hasn't served me well in many ways (bowling being merely one of them). Also, the muscle in my right forearm ached the next day (apparently it hadn't been used since I last bowled).

The thing I learned is that we can't take ourselves too seriously and become upset at things like lousy bowling scores. Instead, celebrate that we are able to bowl at all. As you move toward that place of better health it's so important to appreciate even the small successes. I can't wait to hear that you are bowling again (and loving it.. no matter what the number on the card).

Take care, my friend, and be well.

I, like you, always have a perspective on my own situation. I know we both understand that we have much to be grateful for. Sometimes, we have to search a bit more in our hearts and souls. Each small success does indeed lead to a momentum of more successes. No matter the size of the success, it is important in the ongoing road to not let our concerns overwhelm our lives. You speak wisely, dear Robin.

  35. Chronic Fatigue is not fun. After a year of test after test after specialist after specialist (oh, did I mention test?) and money? Yeah, they found "fibromyalgia". I call that the doctor shrug. You know, can't figure it out so let's lump it in here and give it a name even though we can't treat it. I feel for you on your journey! <3 So, now that I have "it," I wonder if it's not anything more than caregiver fatigue.

I'm glad to see you reminiscing. We have a whole 2 car garage filled with things that trigger TheHubs' memories. I can't bear to throw them away and get anxious when he starts bringing that up. It is a double edged sword for him. Yes it brings back memories of good times, when he was well. And then, it brings up the fact that he's now broken and not the same man as he once was. It is frightening.

You have Chronic Fatigue? Oh, man, that totally sucks. I had it in '89-'93. Nasty stuff. Mine came from a form of environmental poisoning (long story). The hardest thing was nobody knowing what it was, at first, or how to treat it. Most doctors, at the time, hadn't a clue what do for it. Fortunately, I was in California when I got it and had some great natural health practioners around, since standard meds don't work for it. Even dealing with the depression (which is standard with this as is fibromyalgia, and with me that's where my agoraphobia started) I couldn't take full dosage anti-depressants. . Body can't handle the meds with CF.

Took me 4 long years to beat it into remission. It is autioimmune. My medical doctor worked with my natural health practioner (who also had her Medical degree and chose to go natural health instead). Once in remission, it can reoccur if the body gets too stressed. So far I've been fortunate. But I will tell you, being outside and in the sunshine was something I was told to do on a daily basis. Also, and this sounds weird, but my natural health practioner was firm on sitting (or walking) outside, barefoot, feet in contact with the earth. She told me that it had to do with the earth's magnetic forces and the fact that earth heals. There was a whole lot more techie jargon to it but it did work. Hey, you can beat it. Just takes some adjustments like learning to pace myself and what I eat I was on some very good natural remedies. And patience. Not my forte. :-)

Anyway, don't give up the fight. You will win! I'm cheering you on my friend.

    1. Hi Sia,

Firstly, sincere apologies for the lengthy delay in my reply. It's all to do with this ongoing bout of chronic fatigue.

I want to sincerely thank you for you thoughtful, comprehensive response to my post. And bowling, no matter the version, having fun is really what it's all about.

I can so relate to what you allude to. The environmental angle can be a hugely contributing factor. No, I wont go into the nature/nurture debate. Depression, as you note, is often a dominating aspect when you have chronic fatigue with the anxiety of having the diagnosis confirmed, one way or another. The not knowing plays on the mental and physical well being.

Your words, dear friend, I cherished. I know of agoraphobia. A bit of a reluctant recluse living a double life. I also know of the merits of attempting to get outdoors and become in tune with the true balance of nature. The name of my blog is a Chinook tribe word basically meaning, "the great outdoors." We do indeed challenge ailments and the underlying causes. You have discovered your own pace and know that a healthy lifestyle with healthy choices. is conducive to getting better as best one can.

As you cheer me on, I cheer you one and bestow that wondrous gift upon you, the powerful gift of empathy.

Thank you, my incredible friend. Your words resonate and inspire.

      Gary :)

  39. So you're in beautiful Canada. For some reason I thought you were in the UK. I bowled a lot in the 80s too, but never won a any awards or got very good. Ha...Now I bowl with the game console Wii. (I hope Sia's advice above helps. CF sounds awful. Don't give up!)

    1. Hi Sharon,

Actually, I'm presently in the UK. I did, however, do a lot of bowling in Vancouver in the 1970's and 80's. You should of got an award just because you bowled. Virtual bowling sounds like a plan. I am most assuredly paying heed to the wonderful Sia's advice.

Thank you for you supportive comment. A peaceful weekend to you.

Five pin bowler and one is half way there. Whatever the hell that means :) Yes, I'm easy to pick out. Me and my silly grin, along with a questionable tache! :)

I shall walk barefoot through the park. Indeed, we must both attempt to utilise positive resources as catalysts to make us feel better about ourselves.

Thank you, dear Yolanda. A happy weekend to you and your loved ones.

  43. I am by nature a rotten bowler, and practice did nothing to change what nature intended--that I drink sodas and cheer the team on. However, on a first date when I was about sixteen, a handsome dude (not quite as handsome as yourself, mind you) offered to teach me how to bowl. My reputation as being lousy in the lanes preceded me by miles. I accepted his kind offer. He handed me the ball, showed me the technique and said, "Now just do your best." I made three strikes in a row. He glowered at me more with each strike, and then gave me a ride home. Never saw the bloke again. Bowling is not my sport, but it did save me from a poor sport. :-)

    1. Hi Lee,

Yet, by nature, you are a gifted writer and a darned nice lady. A good alternative to any lack of bowling skills, methinks.

So, the young dude, instead of praising your achievements, felt a seething jealousy of your three strike prowess. In his case, he struck out as I loosely use a sporting analogy.

I could of got stuck on that bit out the dude not being as handsome as me, yes me, shy, humble me! :)

Thank you, Lee. Have a nice weekend and I hope you guys get loads of rain!

  44. I have never gone 5 pin bowling- but I do enjoy bowling and used to go duck pin bowling all the time with my friends. I have never won any championships- nor was I very good- but it was a ton of fun. Awesome to learn a bit more about you. Congrats on that championship. It is so cool that it is your inspiration now. :)

    1. Hi Jess,

Ah, duck pin bowling. A game I'm not familiar with. I do note it is similar to ten pin. The fun is the main part of it all, for sure. Of course, being incredibly shy, it's tough for me to share such um, amazing achievements with your good self :) The inspiration of what I have done in the past shall be a catalyst for the now and beyond.

Thank you, dear Jess. A great weekend to you.

And it looks like having a porn-mustache was a prerequisite for 5-pin bowling since all three guys have them! Thanks for sharing and congrats on the trophy!

  48. Reading about you and Jo and your bowling experiences is fun! I knew which one was you in the photo right away. I do hope your journeys back in time will help. I'm so sorry you are still suffering from the fatigue. I think your body is still trying to process and eliminate all the stress you went through last year, because that was A LOT for you, the decision, then the waiting, then finding the right place, then the possible move, then not moving, then waiting again, then moving, then living without Tristan, then little Missy Internet Star having a conniption fit. It's time for a bit of rest, no? Hugs to you and the little Miss! Sorry I've been gone sooooo long. Just got back from one child's wedding and am still preparing for the next one at the end of June! Life is just full of surprises!

    1. Hi Lisa,

Thanks and Jo brings back some memories of the fun times I had. Ah, you noted the Tom Selleck tribute moustache :) The reminiscing has been of help, thank you.

You are most perceptive, Lisa. Indeed, there has been a huge amount of upheaval in my life, my son's life and the beloved Penny's life. It's been overwhelming and in my 3D reality, I've had to make the adjustments with little help. Yes, the exhaustion is a collection of situations combined all at the same time. I'm going though a huge swing in emotions. All shall be better and support from dear people like you has been more powerful than I could of ever imagined.

Wow, weddings. A tug at your heartstrings, no doubt. Congrats to the one child and here's to the wedding on the next one at the end of June. A hopeful surprise as the adventure continues for you and your family.

      Thank you, dear Lisa.

I had not heard of five pin bowling and just read a long Wikipedia article about it. I really enjoy tenpin and will try to find five pin when I am in Vancouver again - maybe next year.
